AFT’s key aim is to benefit the public by working to continually improve standards of professional family therapy and promoting the study, practice, research and teaching of family therapy, as stated in our Constitution which includes our Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association.

What we do

  • Set, maintain and monitor professional standards of training and practice in family and systemic psychotherapy and supervision
  • Provide information and resources for people considering therapy
  • Support members with resources and guidance on practice development and employment issues, a network of local branches, the AFT national conference and other events throughout the year.
  • Develop workforce training in systemic practice for key services
  • Promote and develop research within the field
  • Publish the acclaimed Journal of Family Therapy and Context magazine.
  • Provide resources and information for students
  • Provide information and guidance for commissioners and employers
  • Work with the media to promote understanding of family therapy and systemic practice, and families’ experiences, strengths and needs
  • Contribute to major consultations shaping the future of therapeutic practice and services in the UK
  • Consult with organisations, politicians and policy makers, professional bodies and training institutions throughout the UK and Europe, to support the provision of effective services by well trained professionals.
