AFT has a useful influence on some NICE guidelines which increasingly influence practice in the NHS, primarily in England and Wales.
NICE Clinical Guidelines recommend various models of family or couple therapy for depression in children and young people as well as in adults, including those with a chronic health problem; PTSD, eating disorders, bi-polar disorder, drug misuse, schizophrenia and Type 1 diabetes. There is strong evidence that family and systemic therapy have a key role in the prevention of antisocial personality disorder. The value of working with close relationships is acknowledged for many other mental and physical health conditions. Public Health Guidelines recommend family therapy for behavioural problems in children and young people when parenting training has not worked and to reduce substance misuse.
The Summary of family interventions recommended and reviewed in NICE guidelines provides as overview of recommendations on family and couple therapies.
Here are some of AFT's responses to Scopes and draft guidelines.
