Registering as a Supervisor

 

1) Via the Qualifying (Course) Route

Accredited training course applicants must have satisfactorily completed an accredited training course in supervision. To train for registered supervisor status an applicant should be registered as a systemic/family therapist with UKCP and, usually have completed a period of consolidation, including some experience of supervision. In the period of consolidation applicants should have continued to practice systemic/family therapy, preferably with a mixed client group.

A registered supervisor with AFT is a qualified systemic/family therapist who is eligible to:

Supervise the clinical work of those people training for qualified family therapy status on an accredited course i.e. post-foundation level.

Provide supervision to qualified family therapists as part of their continuing professional development (as described in UKCP Registration Criteria).

If you decide to submit your application, please be advised that the process takes between 3 and 6 months.

The fee for applying to be an approved supervisor via this route is £100. There is currently no annual subscription to remain on the approved list of supervisors.

 

2) Via the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning) Route

This route is for exceptional circumstances.  The usual route to the register is through an accredited course.  (See AFT Red Book)  Please note that all applicants for this route will need to be a member of AFT and registered with UKCP as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist (or any statutory system of regulation replacing UKCP e.g. HPC). This is intended to provide a route to becoming a registered supervisor for the following groups:   

 

• Family and Systemic Psychotherapists who have practiced as a supervisor for many years and have a great deal of experience but did not take advantage of the now closed grandparent route.  It is expected that such applicants will have attended to their CPD as a supervisor.
• Those who have done substantial supervisory training on a course not accredited by AFT.  This includes applicants from overseas and those who have done substantial training outside the modality and can also demonstrate that they have formally acquired knowledge and competence in supervising within a systemic modality. Applicants for this route must be able to demonstrate substantial experience of supervisory practice in a systemic modality. (at least  5  years)
