UKCP CAMPAIGN APRIL 2008 - The Restriction of Psychotherapy Modalities by the Department of Health
Comments to our members from the Association for Family Therapy
The Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice in the UK supports the UKCP campaign to ensure that there is a range of psychotherapy modalities available to the public. Although it is important that psychotherapy provision is based on what is most effective and efficient, an important factor is the fit between client and modality approach. This is a strong argument for ensuring that there is choice for clients and also that all methods are appropriately researched. The humanistic psychotherapies cannot be seen as a subcategory of systemic, cognitive behavioural or psychodynamic psychotherapy or as a post basic specialism as inferred by the Prime Minister’s response to the March petition. They have a long, established tradition of their own and it is extremely concerning that this significant modality may be marginalised if not included in the development of occupational standards for counselling and psychotherapy being undertaken by Skills for Health.
As an organisation our main concern is that the public has access to appropriate psychotherapy and counselling help. We have supported the development and research of family and systemic psychotherapy so that it is widely recognised as effective on its own, and in conjunction with other treatments and approaches. It is one of the evidence based approaches available within the NHS. However we also recognise the value of other approaches which may at times be more appropriate than our modality. We urge the continuation of the rich diversity of provision as well as continued attention to effectiveness . UKCP has urged AFT and its members to support the current campaign by writing to their MPs. All UKCP registrants will have received information directly from UKCP. We hope that these comments will help our members in their response. Further information on statutory regulation can be found on the UKCP website www.psychotherapy.org.uk
