Systemic Practitioner Information
Systemic Training to Intermediate level

All who have an interest in systemic ideas and practice are welcome to be a member of AFT.

Those who have completed systemic training to ‘intermediate level’ through an AFT accredited foundation and intermediate level training, including a CYP-IAPT (SFP) training, are deemed to have developed the knowledge and skills set which can be used to enrich their current professional role and practice.

  • Training up to this level is not a stand-alone professional qualification nor eligible for registration with UKCP
  • It is course certification that denotes level of training gained.

AFT values members who have undertaken systemic training of all levels.

All are welcome to join as standard ‘members’ or 'student members' if continuing with training, and participate fully in all aspects of the association.

Use of the working term - Systemic Practitioner at intermediate level

Although it is not a professional title, in accordance with the blue book 4th Edition (Training standards documents for AFT accredited training), individuals who have completed both foundation and intermediate level training may use the working term ‘systemic practitioners at intermediate level’ to delineate that they have completed the first 2 years of the four year training required to become a qualified family and systemic psychotherapist.

The use of the term ‘systemic practitioner at intermediate level’ is not dependent on being a ‘Systemic Practitioner Member’ nor any other category of AFT membership.

Yes.

You are very welcome to join as a ‘member’ of AFT to support your systemic skills and knowledge. If you are completing qualifying level training you may join/continue as a 'student member'.

Please see AFT's Code of Ethics.

All those trained to intermediate level, regardless of prior professional training, or AFT membership category, are encouraged, at a minimum, to have the same level of CPD and supervision as for those who are on the current ‘systemic practitioner member’ category.

i.e. Have monthly systemic supervision (1.5hrs) from a UKCP registered family and systemic psychotherapist at least 3 years post qualification and engage in systemic practice and systemic CPD.

Training up-to intermediate level does not denote professional qualification. It is not a stand-alone qualification, but part of the four year professional qualification in family and systemic psychotherapy.

As such, AFT does not view an intermediate level training as sufficient for private independent practice, unless the practitioner is already practising under the auspices of another core professional holding registration and using systemic practice alongside, as a useful enhancement to their knowledge and skills.

For guidance for working at intermediate level please see the following document on the Policy, Standards and Guidance page:

AFT does not hold a professional register, but does support members who are Fully Qualified Family and Systemic Psychotherapists with applying for and maintaining UKCP Registration.

You are welcome to ’Join Us’ as a ‘member’ of AFT to support your systemic skills and knowledge.
