Systemic support for people displaced by war and oppression

"Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness"

As thousands of displaced individuals and families come into this country seeking asylum and refuge from the many war zones and areas of oppression in the world, the Association for Family Therapy (AFT) has been developing ways in which it can contribute to the amazing work being done by refugee agencies and voluntary bodies supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

What we offer

  • Psychological therapy for those suffering the effects of the many disturbing experiences that refugees/asylum-seekers face or have faced: e.g., trauma, loss, persecution, racism. Typically, we help people who experience anxiety, depression, panic attacks, trauma, relationship difficulties, bereavement, struggles managing school or work. We work with children, adults, older adults and families of all nationalities.
  • Consultation, training and support for volunteers and staff working in refugee agencies.

The services we offer are free of charge and there is no cost for online events. We try to cover costs of interpreters as necessary but may require some help with a venue and expenses for any face-to-face meetings.

About us

  • We are trained and experienced in working in the field of psychological therapies.
  • We work cross-culturally – collaborating with our clients and adapting our work to create a fit with their experiences and understanding of support and psychological help.
  • Our team are all registered and insured and all receive regular supervision. Anyone working with children is DBS checked.
  • Our team of volunteers are supported by a consultation group comprising a GP, psychiatrist, lawyer, those who are refugees themselves, and senior psychotherapy colleagues.

How our referral process works

We invite agencies to contact us with any questions they may have or requests for help.

We keep a register of our clinicians – their availability and locality – and we aim to match the request for help and the particular needs of the agency, with the appropriate members of our team.
