CYP IAPT

CYP IAPT Systemic Family Practitioner Courses are intermediate level courses developed out of the NHS England initiative “Children and Young Persons Increased Access to Psychological Therapies”. Systemic Family Practice was chosen as one of the evidence -based interventions supported by training initiatives and funding as it was seen as a crucial intervention within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and wider CAMHS services. Typically, the systemic modules are delivered within a Postgraduate Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapies for Children and Young People which includes core value and skills training in key CAMHS interventions and service provision. The Systemic Family Practice Pathway includes modules in basic systemic skills and either of the following options:

  • Depression and self- harm and conduct disorder (2 modules)
  • Adolescent eating disorders.

The Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice collaborated with an expert panel to develop the courses so that they met the requirements of an Intermediate level training and, under the guidance of the National Accreditation Council developed a process for the course accreditation of CYP-IAPT systemic pathway training to work with children, young people and their families

NB Adult IAPT practitioners follow a different training that does not have a systemic base.

Career Progression

The CYP IAPT systemic pathway training, creates the possibility for successful graduates of this course to apply to complete their training on an AFT accredited qualifying (years 3&4) training which leads to the possibility of professional registration with UKCP as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist.

Many graduates of the CYP IAPT courses use their increased knowledge and skills to enhance their current professional role rather than go on to further training.

More recently the funding streams for CYP IAPT courses have changed and it is important to check with individual courses about the present situation with regard to application and sponsorship as this may be different for each course. Usually services put forward current CAMHS employees or recruit to train applicants for places on the course and provide the time for completion of studies. Most courses are one year in length and are taken as a full -time course although courses are experimenting with different formats.
